Ember Vanguard
Ember Vanguard gives you a ragtag party and a slow-burning story about a collapsing frontier kingdom. Combat is turn-based but leans on positioning, so where you place a shield-carrier versus a fire mage matters more than raw stats. We spent a lot of time re-arranging our line before boss fights, and it paid off.
The character writing is better than we expected for a mobile RPG. Companions bicker, hold grudges, and occasionally refuse to cooperate until you smooth things over, which makes the roster feel alive. Progression is generous without being mindless — you always have a meaningful choice about which skill tree to feed.
Sessions can be short or long, which we liked. You can clear a single skirmish on a coffee break or sink an hour into a dungeon crawl. It respects that you're playing on a phone.
What we liked
- Positioning-based combat with real depth
- Companions with personality and friction
- Flexible session length
