Big Bass

Big Bass UK is one of those games that sneaks up on you. We opened it expecting a quick five-minute test and ended up losing an evening to casting lines along a foggy riverbank. The whole thing runs on a gentle loop — pick a spot, choose your tackle, cast, and wait for the tug. It sounds simple, and it is, but the timing on the reel-in gives it just enough tension to keep you leaning forward.

Controls are built entirely around one thumb, which we appreciated. You swipe to cast, hold to build tension, and ease off when the line strains too hard. The game reads the pull surprisingly well, and losing a big catch because you got greedy never felt cheap. Different locations across the UK map unlock as you go, and each one changes the weather, fish behaviour, and the mood of the whole session.

What stuck with us was the calm of it. There's no timer breathing down your neck. The sound design — water, wind, the occasional gull — does a lot of quiet work. It's the kind of game you keep on your phone for train rides when you want to slow your brain down.
